Currents 2025
June 13–22, 2025
El Museo Cultural, Santa Fe
Currents is a project we founded over two decades ago. As curators, we have remained committed to presenting innovative work at the intersection of art and technology by artists based regionally, nationally, and internationally. What’s emerged is a vibrant and diverse festival that draws local and visiting audiences. Each year, Currents offers a platform for artists to experiment, share bold ideas, and push the boundaries of innovation. We’re passionate about making this ever-evolving field accessible to the public. Our goal has always been to create an environment that sparks curiosity and invites people to engage with technology in new, creative ways. We create space for new collaborations by bringing together artists from across the globe and supporting emerging voices.
Santa Fe has been an inspiring place for this festival to grow. Our first exhibition at the CCA in 2002 included video pioneers Steina and Woody Vasulka, who moved to Santa Fe in the ʼ80s. As technology has progressed, so has new media—and so have we. Every year, we showcase a wide range of works by artists responding to the present moment. Today, artists regularly incorporate technology into their practices—but that acceptance took time. While major cities like New York and Los Angeles have become hubs for art and tech, we’ve always loved producing Currents here in the Southwest. Santa Fe’s audiences are engaged, open-minded, and curious, and we care deeply about making the work welcoming. That’s why our team of docents plays such an important role—facilitating conversation and helping visitors connect with the work on a deeper level.
Last year, we introduced a panel discussion focused on artists working with Artificial Intelligence. This year, we’ve programmed a symposium to showcase artists and technologists whose work challenges the conventional pace of digital media, fostering conversations about human interaction with technology and the impact of speed on creativity, culture, and well-being. We’ve invited artists, curators, designers, and cultural producers to be part of the conversation. Alongside the panel, we’ll host a tour of selected works and artist talks exploring this theme. At its core, Currents has always been about reflecting the present moment—how we create, connect, and imagine through technology. This year, we invite you to join us at the festival as we continue that exploration.
