The 2026 midterm elections are finally around the corner, and the political establishment seems to be promising utter chaos. Rough-and-tumble times call for boundary-pushing art—art that crosses borders, reclaims histories in the name of the future, and reshapes our understanding of the lands we inhabit.

While the national union splits at its seams, consider the tightly woven tapestry of Southwest arts discourse. This guide features thirty-six shows across eight states and predicts regional resistance, if not outright revolution, this fall.

2026 Border Biennial/Bienal Fronteriza

September 4, 2026–May 2, 2027

The Texas roundup in this guide is wild: as the temperature and humidity creep down, the Lone Star art milieu whips up. Topping the list is the 2026 Border Biennial, themed Imagining the Border and featuring thirty-one artists and two collectives from both sides of the line. It fills two institutions less than ten miles apart, and will anchor this November’s “binational art encounter” Sutura.

Reclaiming the Future: The Legacy of Japanese American Incarceration

New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary, Santa Fe
September 5, 2026–May 31, 2027

Curator Machiko Harada unites ten Japanese and Japanese American artists who engage the enduring legacies of World War II–era incarceration in the U.S. Anchored by the museum’s proximity to the former Santa Fe Internment Camp, the multimedia display considers history as a living terrain.

Land Art Week

Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City
October 1-3, 2026

The inaugural Land Art Week broadens the term’s scope, looking beyond a clique of white, mostly male artists who traveled West to radically reshape landscapes in the 1960s and ’70s, to a much larger constellation of artists who’ve marked the terrain now known as Utah across millennia. Through conversations and site visits, the three-day event will trace an arc beginning with Indigenous petroglyphs, traversing Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970) and Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels (1973-76), and culminating at an open-air contemporary art museum at Powder Mountain.
