The Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program and the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art support artists’ creative growth and experimentation in a globally recognized program.

Recognized internationally for its generous provision, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program (RAiR) is an opportunity for artists to explore ideas in-depth and take risks during a year-long artist residency.
This program is offered without any requirements or expectations placed on the artists. Each artist receives a three-bedroom house with studio, equipment and facilities to use, and a monthly stipend. A solo exhibition is offered to artists during their residency at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art. While many artists do produce significant bodies of work during their residency, the creative growth of the individual artist is the most significant product of the experience.
The RAiR Program was conceived by businessman and artist Donald B. Anderson in 1967. His vision was to enhance the cultural environment of Roswell and southeastern New Mexico by bringing artists of importance to live and work in the tranquility of the High Plains. His vision resulted in establishing one of the most outstanding residency programs in the country. To date, more than 290 artists from North and South America, Europe, Australia, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East have participated in the program.
The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art was established in 1994 by program founder Donald B. Anderson (1919-2020). It houses a collection of artworks he purchased from RAiR artists—a tradition the RAiR Foundation now continues. Ten galleries exhibit more than 500 artworks by RAiR alumni, including solo exhibitions of current artists-in-residence, with new works added regularly. The Museum’s permanent collection and rotating exhibitions, along with an active slate of public programs and events, provides a unique contemporary art experience for artists, locals, and visitors from around the world.
