The photographs and mixed media pieces in New Life explore the erotics of labor through imagery drawn from construction sites in the Southwest. When Reynolds would travel to these construction sites, he would be drawn back to the folds of tarps, drop cloths, and the protective clothing that workers use to shield themselves from the hazards of the job site. “I found the prolonged, intense attention I was paying to these folds to be a kind of longing,” Reynolds says, “prompting the questions, when does a pragmatic concern like building a structure become an aesthetic one? And when does an aesthetic interest become a more complex desire?”

Francis Reynolds is an artist using photography to reveal the eros of labor. He has been awarded the American Austrian Foundation’s 2022 Seebacher Prize for Fine Arts, and has been recognized as a 2022–23 SITE Scholar by SITE Santa Fe. He received his BA in english from Reed College and is an MFA candidate in studio art at the University of New Mexico; degree expected May 2024.
