RioBravoFineArt kicks off 2024 with January and February Second Saturday Art Hop openings featuring three uniquely New Mexican artists.
Opening on Saturday, January 13, 6-9 pm, is Acoma: A Photo-essay by Michael “Miguel” Pino. Pino, who is noted for his graphite drawings, three of which are in the New Mexico Capitol Art Collection in Santa Fe, is now exploring photography as a medium. Acoma, also known as Sky City as it sits on a mesa 367 feet above the surrounding desert, has a storied past. Pino has set out to capture Acoma as it exists “in the moment” in a series of large-format photographs. Pino’s photographs reveal daily life in the vibrant community that carries forward a rich cultural heritage.
Opening on Saturday, February 10, 6-9 pm, is a joint exhibition featuring artists Nolan Winkler and Raul Dorn. Winkler, whose studio is in the former mining town of Hillsboro, New Mexico, is a longtime regular artist at RioBravoFineArt. She has a distinctive style with an energetic use of color, graphic elements in abstract patterns, and, sometimes, a hint of a representational element. To Winkler, it’s important the viewer knows that “these pieces reflect emotions, ideas, dreams… that we all share.” For this joint exhibition, Winkler has chosen the title The Dance Begins for her pieces.
For Raul Dorn, this will be his first exhibition at RioBravoFineArt. He has had a long and varied career in the arts. His experiences include performance art, songwriting, musical performance, media programming, and the visual arts—both teaching and creating. He has recently worked with the Seattle band Thorne and is currently the vocalist of the electronica duo Sister Black Lagoon. His work has been on view in several regional galleries and is viewable online at the international art site Saatchi. The acrylic and oil paintings by Dorn in this RioBravoFineArt exhibition are from The Lustrate Series created over the last three years. The pieces in this series are an intensely personal representation of the artist and his approach to his art.
The February exhibition is an opportunity to compare the styles of two different artists while gaining an enhanced understanding of the distinctive characteristics of each. “[Dorn’s] bold abstractions will go well alongside my strong but quieter abstract works,” says Winkler of the pairing.
