At his core, Sam Scott is a nature painter. He made it his life’s goal to experience and paint major natural systems: the forest, the ocean, the mountains, and the desert. His colorful life has allowed him to deeply express these subjects, from his expedition in the Amazonian jungle to fishing work in the fierce Alaskan seas, from climbing journeys in the Alps to his abiding love of the Southwestern desert.
“In their passion and diversity, [Scott’s] paintings are a record of a life lived by the heart. They are Sam Scott’s act of giving back to life and, for us, evidence as well of one of America’s most articulate and lyrical painters after nature,” writes curator Jim Edwards.
The solo exhibition Sam Scott: Deep Nature features Scott’s latest oil and watercolor paintings as well as his monumental masterpiece quartet titled The Four Tides, created in 1996 as artist in residence at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi. The exhibition is a testament to Scott’s ability to perceive and paint essences. The work exudes mastery, delicacy, poetry, and force, and is an affirmation of Scott’s recognition by his peers and the art community to be one of New Mexico’s great living painters.
Scott came to New Mexico in 1969 after he earned an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where his teachers included abstract painters Grace Hartigan, Philip Guston, and Clyfford Still, among others. His work has been the focus of local exhibitions at the New Mexico Museum of Art (Sam Scott: An American Voice, 1967-1997) and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum (Journey to Center: New Mexico Watercolors by Sam Scott). He has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. In 1975, Scott was among the first artists to represent New Mexico at the Whitney Museum Biennial of contemporary art.
