New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe

Join the New Mexico Museum of Art for a “once-in-a-century community birthday party,” as the institution turns one hundred on the day of the celebration. From 10 am to 5 pm, the museum will re-open after two months of building renovations with a plaza-wide party with events and activities including historical reenactments, a photo booth, birthday cake, live music, curator conversations, and small performances.
Horizons: People & Place in 20th Century New Mexican Art

November 25 will also see the opening of three new exhibitions. Horizons: People & Place in 20th Century New Mexican Art showcases the museum’s collections and features some of the biggest names to have lived and worked in New Mexico in the last century, including Robert Henri, Marsden Hartley, John Sloan, Georgia O’Keeffe, Bert Geer Phillips, James Stovall Morris, Victor Higgins, Awa Tsireh, Maria Martinez, Fritz Scholder, Alfred Morang, Cady Wells, Andrew Dasburg, and Gustave Baumann. The museum has had an eye for the contemporary since its founding, and its collections represent the growth of that progressive vision since 1917.
Shining Light: Perspectives in Photography

Using portraits and oral histories, Shining Light: Perspectives in Photography introduces some of the personalities in New Mexico’s twentieth century photography scene, such as artist Laura Gilpin and curator and photography historian Beaumont Newhall. New Mexico photo luminaries include such as Ansel Adams and Thomas Barrow, Alfred Stieglitz and Anne Noggle. The exhibition also highlights the museum’s and the state’s long associations with photography with vintage exhibition announcements, brochures, and publications that reflect the medium’s growing prominence at the museum from the mid-1920s to the present day.
Contact: Local to Global

Focused on a contemporary, contextualized approach to art in New Mexico, Contact: Local to Global highlights the engagement of artists with New Mexico, and New Mexico’s intersections with the national and international arts communities. This exhibition will have two broad components: one, a focus on works by artists who have lived and worked in the region, such as Bruce Nauman, Agnes Martin, Frederick Hammersley, and Susan York. The second being contemporary artworks that address issues of land and environment. These will include a site-specific installation by indigenous collective Postcommodity, video art by Ati Maier and Yorgo Alexopoulos, and others.
