If you’re Denver-bound this ski season, the MCA Denver has a trifecta of concurrent exhibitions on view through January 29. Kim Dickey: Words Are Leaves is a major survey of work by the Boulder, CO–based artist. Primarily working in ceramics, but also other media including textile and photography, Dickey has a fascination for landscape design and decorative ornament. Her sculptures explore pattern and art historical motifs by reexamining and repurposing their affects. Her vessels, animalia, and large-scale foliate installations come together to create a whimsical foray into some reimagined Renaissance garden of the future.
In Nathan Carter’s Meet the Dramastics, the artist’s sculpture, drawings, installations, and miniature stage sets all center on the “brief but legendary” career of the fictional band The Dramastics, comprised of four women. With a flair for theatricality, Carter’s works inhabit a space of childlike imaginative play and DIY punk rock vigor. A film by the artist, THE DRAMASTICS ARE LOUD AF, accompanies the exhibition at scheduled showings throughout.
Finally, Bodacioussss is a large group exhibition presenting work by twenty artists. Congruous with Nathan Carter’s solo show, this group show exhibits work by artists engaging with DIY and playful kinds of art-making, while questioning cultural and intellectual issues in the so-called “post-Internet” age. Many of the artists here exemplify the shifting landscapes of creatives, who now often move with ease between the worlds of fine and commercial art, refined and popular styles, and the physical and digital worlds.
Included artists are Travis Egedy, Aaron Garber-Maikovska, Owvbics, Kyle Warfield, Alexander Page, Don Fodness, Aoife Dunne, Sessa Englund, Kim Gordon, Peter Sutherland, Dara Birnbaum, Keith Haring, POSE, Jayson Musson, Parker Ito, Katie Torn, Trudy Benson, Gary Panter, Caroline David, Kytten Janae, and Hanski.
