TAI Modern
Santa Fe, New Mexico
June 30 – July 23, 2017
Two painters, Los Angeles–based Monique van Genderen and Lamy, New Mexico–based Bart Exposito are presented in a two-person show at TAI Modern. Formerly colleagues in the Art Department at UCLA, the two artists engage the limits and modalities of contemporary abstract painting. Van Genderen is known for working across media and techniques, such as wax resist, egg tempera, watercolor, and ceramic glazes. The artist explains, “I have been trying to undo the structure in order to get at the underpinnings of the conceptual mode of painting. I have experimented with materials in order to unravel ‘ideas.'” In contrast to van Genderen’s organic brushstrokes, Exposito’s works tend toward the refined and graphic, taking on forms evocative of typography or hieroglyphs.
Opening reception on Friday, June 30, 5-7 pm.
