Matthews Gallery presents a major retrospective of Janet Lippincott, a pioneer of Southwest Modernism. Born in New York in 1918, Lippincott had attended the Art Students League of New York at age fifteen before departing for Paris where she was introduced to the work of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and other early modernists. During World War II Lippincott joined the Women’s Army Corp and suffered great injuries during the German bombings of London. In 1949, she first traveled to Taos to study under Emil Bisttram. He discouraged her from continuing with her work, but she spent the next fifty years in a stellar career as an abstract expressionist painter, which included a stint at the San Francisco Art Institute. Matthews Gallery, representing the artist’s estate, will exhibit over 100 works, sketchbooks, a scrapbook, personal artifacts, and a series of rare photographs.
