An international phenomenon and the pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, Zakir Hussain returns to New Mexico with premier santoor maestro, Rahul Sharma, in remembrance of Rahul Sharma’s father, the legendary Hindustani musician, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who is widely acclaimed for bringing his Kashmiri folk music instrument, the santoor, to the classical concert stage. Shivkumar Sharma’s concerts with Zakir Hussain were considered among the greatest musical feasts of our time. Hussain’s expressive tabla drumming along with Sharma’s command of the santoor make for a stunning combination of improvisational virtuosity, and though the santoor and tabla are associated with classical Indian music, these two artists are renowned for pioneering the use of their respective instruments in contemporary formats.
