5. Gallery is honored to present Liminal in hand: paper curls like the form of clay, a new installation and exhibition from Utako Shindo.
In her own words:
“Liminal in hand: paper curls like the form of clay
Paper curls like the form of clay, withstand to gather shadows – liminal of both real and illusion.
Hand thrown clay centers and breathes, wet and thirsty. Watered ink instantly dries – an opposite invention with the language of flame that leaves trace behind.
She says each pot with painted paper is the earth and the sky, creating a unique atmosphere. I attend to the colors, the humidity and the dryness, and the spacings of objects including the actual forms, the painted images and the shadows.
Making a sculpture installation for us that brings together the expanses and the differences – a play in the liminality to imagine our possible home.”
Utako Shindo’s exhibitions often invite us into a quiet space of observation—where we can watch light and shadow move or focus on the sensitivity of a paper’s edge, a vessel’s form, and the space between the two.
