Lila Steffan is a painter, paint maker and paper maker working with foraged plant and mineral pigments. Tending Soil, an exhibition of Steffan’s work on handmade paper and recycled fabric, will be on display at Martinez Studio beginning Saturday, February 10, 2024. The show will open at 10 am on February 10 and remain open all day for the SweetART Serenade gallery walk. The opening reception will be held at 5 pm on February 10 and the show will stay up through March 3, 2024.

Lila Steffan is a Santa Fe based artist whose work is influenced by resilient landscapes and the histories of the natural pigments she works with. Her watercolor paints are hand-ground from rocks, soils and plants, a slow, meditative process requiring ample time spent outdoors foraging for color. Steffan describes her work as “balancing abstraction with close observation of nature.” Often featuring landscapes or individual organisms in the process of recovery, Steffan’s paintings offer the viewer a moment of intimate connection with the natural world.
