Danielle Rae Miller’s ink on vellum drawings layer density on transparency to reveal inter-species juxtapositions in bilaterally symmetrical arrangements suggestive of ritual. The artist’s hand is evident in the careful overlay of images, which are arranged as if to be read by creature code.

The human heart and skeletal elements, spine, pelvis, hands, rib cage, etc. provide a scaffolding from which her compositions are built, confirming that our awareness of other species is filtered through human experience.

Miller grew up near the Rocky Mountain foothills in northern Colorado and currently lives close to the Rio Grande Bosque in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In her repeated walks through the Bosque, the artist observes plants, insects, birds, and reptiles indigenous to the Middle Rio Grande Valley and invasive species that arrived with European colonization and says that “This land and everything on it is marked by complex histories inscribed with resilience, adaptation, resistance, and survival.”
