Chronicles of Contrast, a mixed-media experimental photography exhibition by Cougar Vigil of the Jicarilla Apache tribe, examines the complex relationship between appropriation, stereotypes, and representations of Native American culture. Drawing on his upbringing on the reservation, Vigil’s work contrasts authentic depictions of Indigeneity—sourced from his photojournalism archive with the Jicarilla Chieftain—with the stereotypical portrayals often seen in mainstream media.
Vigil’s collaged fabric cyanotypes feature recognizable Native artifacts, such as bows and arrows, intertwined with abstract patterns and natural elements. This innovative blend challenges viewers to engage more deeply, prompting curiosity and encouraging exploration of Indigenous culture rather than relying on preconceived notions. Vigil emphasizes the need to connect Indigenous narratives with broader audiences to combat generalizations about Native identity.
A documentary and experimental photographer, Vigil graduated from Pratt Institute with a Master of Fine Arts in 2018. His commitment to his community and traditional Jicarilla scholarship informs his artistic practice. He also serves as the editor of the Jicarilla Chieftain and was recognized as one of Southwest Contemporary’s “12 New Mexico Artists to Know” in 2023.
The opening reception for Chronicles of Contrast is scheduled for November 8th from 6-9 PM, with the exhibition running through December 6, 2024, at Revolt Gallery in Taos. This gallery, established in 2017, supports local and emerging artists, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds, while fostering artistic freedom. The University of New Mexico–Taos offers programs in fine arts and digital media, preparing students for careers in various artistic fields.
