Welcome to the second annual edition of our special “artists issue!”
All year long we share the stories of artists from across our state, but this special issue is our way of focusing on a sample of some of the premier talent continuously emerging from New Mexico. These are artists whose works are shaping the landscape of contemporary art in the Southwest.
This year, like the year before, our open call received over 400 submissions from artists of all ages, backgrounds, and from all corners of the state. And, like last year, the quality and diversity of work have been astounding. We were honored and grateful to enlist the help of another guest juror this year: Andrew Connors, director of the Albuquerque Museum, who helped us accomplish the difficult task of narrowing down the final selection to twelve. In the process, beyond the final twelve that are featured here, we’ve been delighted to discover many talented creators across the state that we look forward to following as their work and careers grow.
The following spreads feature profiles and artwork from this year’s twelve. You can see more of their work on our website, southwestcontemporary.com, and view select works by the artists in a group exhibition that opens March 6, 5-8 pm, and will be on view through April 25 at Southwest Contemporary’s project space located at 1415 W Alameda Street in Santa Fe.
