Internationally acclaimed installation artist and photographer Sandy Skoglund presents Natural Havoc, a new exhibition at Rule Gallery in Marfa, Texas. Opening during Chinati Weekend, the show coincides with Enchanting Nature, Skoglund’s major survey at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, positioning Marfa as another destination for art lovers to experience her work firsthand.
Skoglund is celebrated for her meticulously staged environments that blur the boundaries between sculpture, photography, and installation. For over five decades, she has created dreamlike worlds pulsing with color, pattern, and uncanny narratives.
Natural Havoc offers an intimate lens into this celebrated practice. Featured works include her Outtakes series—alternate camera views from her iconic tableaux—alongside sculptural objects, Polaroids, and preparatory drawings that trace the evolution of her ideas. Together, these pieces illuminate moments when artistic choices were still in flux, granting audiences rare insight into her creative process.
Highlights include Skoglund’s Eyeflakes—snowflake-like patterns composed of human eyes, born from her monumental Winter installation—and a presentation of her legendary Revenge of the Goldfish (1981). These works reveal not only the surreal final images for which she is known, but also the experimental steps and handmade details that underpin them.
The exhibition underscores Skoglund’s enduring fascination with the tension between artifice and nature, order and chaos. By pairing finished photographs with never-before-seen ephemera, Natural Havoc invites visitors to step inside the artist’s imagination and glimpse the slow unfolding of her process.
