HOLDING TIME combines a selection of ceramic works by Robert King, an artist whose practice is deeply embedded in land, material, and process rhythms. His vessels and sculptural forms serve as records of transformation—clay shaped by hand, fire imprinting its heat, and place becoming presence. King’s work reflects a relationship with material that extends far beyond utility. Sourcing wild clay from the land and incorporating locally gathered and hand processed rocks and minerals, he builds pieces embodying the physical landscape and its histories. His practice is informed by his Choctaw heritage, engaging with traditions of resilience, adaptation, and the deep knowledge embedded in natural materials. At the Center for Contemporary Arts Cinema Gallery here in Santa Fe, HOLDING TIME embraces space as an extension of Duende Gallery in Galisteo, NM, where King’s work will later be featured in the upcoming exhibition, Indigenization, a collaboration with the world renowned Tia Collection. While HOLDING TIME presents King’s ceramics in a focused, contemplative setting, Indigenization will expand upon these ideas—offering a broader dialogue on the transformation of materials, land-based practice, and the evolving presence of Indigenous artistic methodologies. Visitors are invited to engage with King’s work here, at CCA, as a moment of stillness—a space where fired earth holds the memory of time itself. To fully experience the depth of King’s practice, you are invited to Duende Gallery in Galisteo, where his work will unfold in new contexts as part of Indigenization, opening April 26th.
