Genesis: The Pottery of Tona Da, an extraordinary collection of pottery and paintings by the legendary San Ildefonso artist opens at King Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Saturday, October 19 with a reception from 1-3 pm.
Tragically, Da (1940–2008) had a career of only about 15 years, with about 30 pieces created each year. This exhibition includes nearly twenty individual pieces and encapsulates his career from the 1960-80s. Da’s artistic career was cut short on April 15, 1982, when a motorcycle accident left him damaged for life.
Owner of the gallery Charles King is also the author of The Art and Life of Tony Da and he will be in the gallery to discuss Da’s artistic career and continued impact in the world of Native art and Native pottery. Da was one of the first rockstars of the Native art world and was famous for the quote, “the more outrageous you are, the more people will want to come and see you.”
