Tiana Japp is a Nehiyaw, Ojibwe, and Métis beadwork artist. She is an enrolled member of Cowessess First Nations in Saskatchewan and a member of Sagkeeng First Nations in Manitoba. Through her work, Japp contemplates the nature of traditional art, combining personal style with a vibrant tapestry of humor and pop culture, weaving a narrative that is both rooted in heritage and reflective of the contemporary zeitgeist—a reminder that tradition, far from being static, is a dynamic force perpetually reshaped by the currents of time and culture.
“In this beadwork collection, I explore the connection between Indigenous land protection and the celebration of the landscapes that define my Nehiyaw, Ojibwe, and Métis heritage. Through each bead interlaced with intention, my art narrates a vibrant testament to the sanctity of the land and the unyielding commitment of Indigenous stewardship. It is an invitation to witness the tradition of beadwork intertwined with an advocacy for land preservation, reflecting a journey that honors our past while forging a sustainable path forward. Through this, I aim to ignite a dialogue on conservation, rooted in the tapestry of Indigenous wisdom and our collective responsibility to safeguard our planet for future generations.”
