Two winter exhibitions at Richard Levy Gallery play with perception and illusion. Emi Ozawa’s BLUE DANGO: points of view is an exhibition of new sculptures, works on paper, and paintings on shaped panels. Ozawa plays with perspective using color, form, and shadow. She experiments with how shapes change from different angles—curves become lines and circles become ovals in BLUE DANGO. Color shifts in her shaped wooden panels to create illusion. Light and shadow form new compositions in her folded paper pieces when viewed from different angles. This sense of play is reinforced by the titles as the artist finds inspiration in shape, geometry, and idioms.
Jeff Kellar: Stacked Cornered, and Glimpsed is an online exhibition of ten new minimalist paintings presented exclusively on Artsy. Kellar creates beautiful surfaces through the application of many layers of acrylic resin and clay pigment onto aluminum panels. Each layer is methodically sanded and buffed, leaving the surface smooth and modulated. Playing with illusion, ambiguity, and space, Kellar uses these flat surfaces to form dimensional compositions.
