Santa Fe’s September celebration of art spotlights Kevin and Jennifer Box’s Origami in the Garden with a gallery show, a documentary film, and a studio tour in Northern New Mexico.
Jennifer and Kevin Box created Origami in the Garden in 2013. The first exhibition opened at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden in 2014, and the exhibition has been experienced by more than 2 million visitors in gardens and museums throughout the United States ever since. Kevin Box, a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, has perfected his unique approach to sculpture and applied it to complex design collaborations with world-renowned origami masters over the years. During her years as a dancer in New York, Jennifer Box performed, choreographed, and created her own costumes, which led her to create her “dress series” of sculptures with Kevin.
“It feels as if the stars are aligning creatively for a September explosion of joy in Santa Fe! Kevin and I have been working with our collaborating artists, foundries, fabricators, administrators, gardens, and galleries for many years to bring us to this one moment of alignment,” says Jennifer. “Barbara Bentree and John Rangel have captured much of the past few years on film, and Kay Contemporary Art continues to be our top gallery in the nation! We are so fortunate to maintain a great connection with the local community and be part of the Turquoise Trail Studio Tour.”
This multi-media art week celebrating Origami in the Garden begins on Friday, September 16, 5-7 pm at Kay Contemporary Art. The gallery show Carried Away features new works by Jennifer and Kevin Box and will be held in the historic building and beautiful garden outside at Kay Contemporary Art at 600 Canyon Road. The artists will present a talk at 6 pm.
The long-awaited Santa Fe premiere of the film Origami in the Garden will debut at the Jean Cocteau Cinema on Thursday, September 22. This feature-length documentary film has been winning awards and touring film festivals all over the world, and now it is finally returning to the land where it was created. Santa Fe filmmakers Barbara Bentree and John Rangel are sharing the story of Jennifer and Kevin Box with a red carpet celebration. A portion of the funds collected will benefit the local school New Mexico School for the Arts. There will be two screenings of the documentary film at the theater; one at 5:30 pm and one at 8 pm, with a reception between screenings.
Finally, the Turquoise Trail Sculpture Garden near Santa Fe is the home and sculpture garden of Jennifer and Kevin Box, the creators of Origami in the Garden. The Turquoise Trail Sculpture Garden is a private residence nestled in the Little Garden of the Gods on Highway 14. With towering rock formations encompassing the three-acre sculpture garden, visitors can meander through a distinct southwest landscape discovering art along the way. The Garden is only open to the public during the Boxes’ participation in the Turquoise Trail Studio Tour—September 17-18 and 24-25 from 10 am to 4 pm.
