As a part of its regular grantmaking, the National Endowment for the Arts announced over $84 million for 1,144 new awards to organizations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and each of the five U.S. territories this month. Grants are awarded in thirteen artistic disciplines, arts research, and partnership agreements with all U.S. state and regional arts agencies.
“These awards demonstrate the continued creativity and excellence of arts projects across America and the nimbleness of our nation’s arts organizations in the face of a national crisis that shuttered their doors for months,” said Mary Anne Carter, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “By funding arts projects in every U.S. state, territory, and the District of Columbia, the National Endowment for the Arts again celebrates the opportunity to make the arts available to every corner of the country and to see how the arts can heal and unite us.”
In New Mexico, twelve organizations are the recipients of NEA grants totaling $1,007,000. Among them, Wise Fool New Mexico received an Art Works award of $30,000 for circus arts training and performances.
Co-executive director Kristen Woods said: “Wise Fool believes that the circus arts are more important now than ever. We have seen over quarantine that the arts have played a pivotal role in making life enjoyable and sustainable. Circus connects us, brings a spark to life, and helps us work through feelings and heal. As we are able to practice together, we are excited to share the benefits of circus with our community.”
SITE Santa Fe received an Art Works award of $20,000 for a major retrospective exhibition of work by Brazilian artist Regina Silveira. Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, the exhibition has been postponed, and it is now scheduled to open in the fall of 2021 and extend through the spring of 2022.
SITE’s director and chief curator Irene Hofmann stated: “Being awarded an Art Works grant from The National Endowment for the Arts is an incredibly meaningful vote of confidence in the work we do at SITE. This is especially consequential now in this time of economic uncertainty. The significance of the National Endowment for the Arts cannot be understated and has made so much possible for SITE and the artists we champion over the years. We are deeply honored and proud to be a 2020 award recipient.”
