The Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe announces the reopening of its gallery space with the new solo exhibition Marietta Patricia Leis: Sense Memories. An opening reception will be held this Friday, December 3, 5-7 pm at CCA’s Muñoz Waxman Gallery.
Leis is an Albuquerque-based visual artist and poet. Leis’s reductive, expressive visual practice is shaped out of experiments in a variety of material processes and takes inspiration from the forms of nature, sense of place, and the internal landscape. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Mark Rothko Art Center in Latvia, the Museo Italo Americano in San Francisco, and the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos.
“Sense memories” are memories summoned by one or more of the sight, smell, and hearing senses. The sculptural works exhibited at CCA are situated in a vortex of light, color, minimalism, and expression that evoke ephemeral, atmospheric qualities inspired by the artist’s travels. The subtleties in materiality encourage the viewer to examine the artworks closely and to enter a meditative, contemplative space, allowing for access to the vibratory and resonant properties of the Earth, which are frequently experienced as sense memories.
The exhibition features more than two dozen works, including The Silent Road, a large-scale sculptural painting created for an exhibition in the Palazzo Mora under the auspices of the European Cultural Centre and the GAA Foundation on the occasion of the 2019 Venice Biennale.
An architectural showcase drawn from Helen Thompson’s recent book Santa Fe Modern (Monacelli Press, 2021), featuring photographs by Casey Dunn, opens the following weekend on December 10 in CCA’s spector ripps project space. Both exhibitions will run through February 27, 2022.
Marietta Patricia Leis will be conducting a live reading of her poetry on Saturday, December 4, 6-7 pm—the evening following the exhibition’s opening reception—alongside poets Mei-mei Berssenbrugge and Anne Haven McDonnell. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for all in-person events.
