Exhibit/208 25th Anniversary Group Show
December 8, 2023–January 27, 2024
exhibition walk-through: Saturday, January 13, 3-5 pm
Exhibit/208 is celebrating twenty-five years of bringing the finest in contemporary art to the larger community of Albuquerque with a huge group show of fifty artists with work in all media. The exhibition is on view through January 27, 2024. The gallery will present a walk-through of the show on Saturday, January 13, from 3 to 5 pm with the curator/director of Exhibit/208, Kim Arthun, and a number of the exhibiting artists. The history of the gallery and some insights from the artists in the show will be discussed. The gallery has ten shows lined up for 2024 with some of the great work by wonderful artists the gallery is known for. Just a few of the artists lined up for one-person shows include Jonathan Morse, Lucy Maki, Marc McCamey, Dani Jeffries, Ted Laredo, Karsten Creightney, Zachariah Rieke, Richard Hogan, and Angela Berkson.
Exhibit/208 has created a unique home for serious contemporary artists in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Created by three local artists, Dwayne Maxwell, Russell Hamilton and Kim Arthun, the gallery has been home to many of this state’s finest contemporary artists over the years. The gallery has been pivotal in providing a first-class exhibition space in Albuquerque that has nurtured three generations of local artists, many coming from the art department at the University of New Mexico as students, retired professors, instructors, or BFA/MFA graduates. Albuquerque has always taken a back seat to the more well-known arts communities of Santa Fe and Taos, but with the help of UNM, it has embraced modernism and a much more urban take in its own thriving arts community.
With the availability of cheaper real estate and a home-grown community of talented artists, Albuquerque has been home to some incredible contemporary galleries over the years, showcasing both local and national shows, including Motel Gallery, Hoshour Gallery, Wildine Gallery, Graham Gallery, Meridian Gallery, Dartmouth Street Gallery, Café Gallery, Donkey Gallery, Sheri Crider Gallery, and Sanitary Tortilla Factory.
The “blueprint” for Exhibit/208 was very simple: create a gallery that the three principals wanted to be in, and then surround themselves with the work of local artists they admired. Almost immediately, the gallery began to be the place so many local artists wanted to be a part of. Run by local artists, the gallery became known as “friendly” to artists, meaning the artists were able to present the shows as they wanted, rather than what the gallery wanted. Exhibit/208 believes that the artist is the best arbiter of their own best work. The gallery has the final say, but rarely uses it. The gallery produces ten to twelve shows each year and has produced more than 250 solo exhibitions and more than 150 group exhibitions in the past twenty-five years.
Exhibit/208 is ready to move forward with new shows in the years to come and will continue its long tradition of showing the best Albuquerque and New Mexico have to offer!
