MENDING THE SOCIAL FABRIC – MENDING BEE
Join us, sewers and non-sewers alike in a collaborative and creative visible Mending BEE.*
Participants will gather around a 10 foot long piece of plaid fabric riddled with holes and rips. With an assortment of stitching, patching and weaving techniques you will fill holes, stabilize edges and make the fabric stronger. The stitches will be visible with designs, textures and colors. You will not be reconstructing the torn fabric with perfectly sized invisible stitches but taking flights of fancy to make something entirely new. The fun part is that all of you will be working on the same piece of fabric at the same time, just like in an old-time quilting bee. As part of the design we will also build a sculpture with small embroidery hoops filled with torn fabric for you to mend. After each Mending Bee the plaid and the hoops go back on the wall as part of the exhibition.
