Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line
June 20–September 21, 2025
New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary, Santa Fe
This summer, the New Mexico Museum of Art welcomes a landmark exhibition that draws a luminous thread between past and present, fine art and design, elegance and innovation. Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line, organized by the Mucha Foundation, brings more than 100 works by legendary Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) to Santa Fe from June 20 through September 21, 2025. The exhibition marks a rare opportunity to experience the work of an artist whose influence continues to ripple across global visual culture.
Following its North American debut at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the exhibition arrives in Santa Fe as part of a multi-venue tour that also includes stops in Florida, Missouri, and Mexico. Known for his elegant, flowing linework and signature Art Nouveau style, Mucha transformed everyday advertising and poster art into objects of beauty and power.
Mucha’s intricate linework and unmistakable style transformed the visual language of the early 20th century. His elegant portrayals of flowing-haired women adorned everything from theater posters to advertisements, yet his influence was anything but ephemeral. As the decades passed, his aesthetic became a touchstone for psychedelic art in the 1960s and continues to echo in today’s manga, graphic novels, and fashion design.
“Mucha’s art transcended its time, becoming a bridge between the fine and decorative arts and inspiring artists from the psychedelic era to contemporary manga creators,” says Dr. Mark White, executive director of the New Mexico Museum of Art. “We’re thrilled to bring this immersive experience to Santa Fe.”
Organized thematically and curated by Tomoko Sato of the Mucha Foundation, the exhibition explores the arc of Mucha’s career and vision. From his celebrated collaborations with actress Sarah Bernhardt—whose likeness he rendered with strength and sensuality—to his groundbreaking work in graphic design and the decorative arts, the exhibition captures the breadth of Mucha’s artistic reach.
Though steeped in the aesthetics of fin-de-siècle Paris, Mucha’s work resonates with timeless appeal. The exhibition invites visitors to look beyond the ornamental surface and discover the cultural, spiritual, and humanistic ideas that drove the artist’s creative practice.
Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line is made possible through the collaboration of the Mucha Foundation and the Phillips Collection, with curatorial support from Renée Maurer and generous backing from individual donors. The presentation also received essential support from the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C.
For Santa Fe audiences, the exhibition is a rare chance to experience Mucha’s enduring influence firsthand. The New Mexico Museum of Art, a cornerstone of the state’s cultural life, continues its mission to connect global art with local audiences—and in this case, to celebrate the timeless power of a single, masterful line.
