Chris Roberts-Antieau: Painted Horse
Friday, March 4, 5-8 pm MT
Antieau Gallery, Santa Fe
The world-renowned artist Chris Roberts-Antieau only releases a few new pieces per year, which makes each new piece highly anticipated. Her new work, Painted Horse, boasts the artist’s signature style, intricate technique, and mysterious composition. Painted Horse will be premiered exclusively at the artist’s Santa Fe gallery and celebrated with an opening reception.
Antieau has consistently been a pioneer of machine embroidery. Her main body of work, which she calls “fabric paintings,” are highly sophisticated tapestries created in her iconic style of fabric appliqué and intricate free-motion embroidery, crafted on a simple Bernina sewing machine. Antieau’s subject matter ranges from joyfully candid cultural commentary depicting unbelievable true stories (such as The Death Of James Brown) to more introspective reflections on nature, human perception, reality, and truth shown in her painterly images of stoic women and animals in surreal environments.
Chris Roberts-Antieau is a completely self-taught artist and has developed an entirely unique style and medium over her decades-long career. Her work has awed audiences across the country since the beginnings of her craft-show days to today, now operating three of her own galleries in Santa Fe and New Orleans, and is highly collected around the globe. She views the world with child-like enthusiasm and imparts her wit and observations to all of her subjects. Antieau’s work is undeniably relatable thanks to her candidness and artistic generosity, and it tends to inspire an emotional response from viewers who may find themselves laughing out loud at one piece and weeping tears of joy and sadness at the next. She believes that artists are small beacons of light that are put on this planet to say truths that words can’t express.
Antieau Gallery was originally established in Santa Fe as a pop-up gallery during the summer of 2017 and has since become Chris Roberts-Antieau’s second permanent, artist-owned gallery, the first of which opened in New Orleans in 2010 in the heart of the French Quarter. Formerly on West Water Street, Antieau Gallery Santa Fe has since transitioned into the beautiful space in 130 Lincoln Avenue, previously inhabited by other noteworthy local galleries. Antieau’s work is also exhibited in museums, galleries, and private collections around the world.
