For Rolland “the title rough ground refers to things such as the surface and composition of clay paint; to landscape, land, and soil; to the “ground” painters paint on; and finally, to the metaphorical difficult terrain she lives in politically, personally, and artistically. I aspire to live a rough and grounded life because it allows for the directness and freedom I aim for.” Her commitment to being a painter has kept her on the “queer and wide (as opposed to the straight and narrow).” Rolland is engaged in a “dialogue with her work, both insisting that they have a right to exist.”
Rolland has lived and worked in New Mexico for over thirty years. She received her BFA from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia in 1977, and studied at Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy. She has taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and at Pennsylvania State University, Ogantz. Rolland is represented by Richard Levy Gallery, Albuquerque, NM.
