Tom Kirby: Illumination
March 20—April 8, 2020
The exhibition title Illumination refers, in part to the journey Tom has been on for twenty years. He has traveled to 20 countries, seeking out inspiration from some of the greatest art works in the world. Through this process he has confirmed there is a Universal Aesthetic of Art and Beauty. Tom rejects the post-modern assertion that beauty is relative to different cultures. He believes Beauty and its essential elements stay the same. A range of works, from Raphael’s The School of Athens in Rome, Italy, The Great Buddha in Kamakura, Japan and the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Tom has visited thousands of artworks during his travels to Europe, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East and North Africa. All great art expresses something immutably true, a transcendental Universal Aesthetic. In his current paintings he is not seeking to express himself personally, they aren’t about his emotions, beliefs or states of mind. These are paintings about Universal Consciousness and Beauty.
Tom adds, “Transcendence is a moment of illumination that I wish for my viewer. The light effects in my painting are symbolic of that illuminated consciousness.”
