Life’s a Picnic!
community celebration: Saturday, June 6, 12-2 pm
Santa Fe Railyard Park
Take a moment to envision the ideal creative community. Who would be a part of it, what would you want to create together, and how would you support each other together? Santa Fe–based artist collective Abstract Picnic, and their new public art installation, Life’s a Picnic!, shine by example to answer those questions.
Abstract Picnic is an artist-led collective dedicated to cultivating spaces where experimentation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and community connection thrive. Through monthly gatherings and creative happenings, the group encourages an open, anything-goes ethos where painters, performers, musicians, designers, and curious newcomers alike can share ideas, play, and make things together. That spirit of joyful, heart-forward collaboration infused every stage of bringing the Life’s a Picnic! mural to fruition, and now invites its audience to reconnect with the simple but radical acts of gathering, creating, and being present together.
Presented by the Railyard Park Conservancy’s Railyard Art Project, the project was led by producer Carol Schrader, creative director JESHAKA, and technical director Will Slayden, with support from community partner Relay Santa Fe and funding from the City of Santa Fe’s Arts and Culture Department. From concept to installation, the collective’s process epitomized shared authorship. Early proposal drafts evolved through open discussions before culminating into a three-day creation marathon at Relay where more than twenty members contributed according to their skills. From outlining, painting, and sealing to supplying snacks, offering encouragement, and cleaning up afterward, the mural’s imagery came together in just twenty-two hours of collective studio time before being installed.
The mural features a red-and-white checkerboard picnic blanket holding colorful representations of picnic items come to life. These images also make a sly nod to famous works of art, and there is an online matching game to help viewers figure out the connections. “At its heart, the mural embodies who we are and what we love to do,” says member JESHAKA. “It’s about inviting people to pause, play, laugh, connect through art and think about life from a more present perspective.”
Drawing inspiration from the deeply embedded cultural ritual of the picnic, Life’s a Picnic! uses the act of gathering outdoors as a metaphor for life itself: preparation meeting spontaneity, hospitality blending with joy, and community taking shape through shared presence. The mural’s playful imagery and layered historical art references celebrate conviviality, imagination, and the creative energy that emerges when people come together.
The mural will serve as the centerpiece for a community celebration on Saturday, June 6, 2026, 12-2 pm at the Railyard Park. The event invites visitors to potluck, play, relax, and enjoy a wonder-filled cyanotype activity, making a “solar place setting” with a message or drawing of their creation as the main course.
Additional Abstract Picnic art will be featured in a group show, Smorgasbord, at Relay Santa Fe, May 22-24.
