Vol. 5 — Collectivity + Collaboration
The latest issue of Southwest Contemporary takes a look at collective practice and artistic collaboration throughout the Southwest. Art-making has long been equated with solitary practice and individual expression, and while collective practice and collaboration is not new, it is certainly becoming more prevalent. From DIY artist-coop galleries to activist-artist collectives to young radical publishing cooperatives—collaborative spirit can be found throughout the Southwest. These models of collectivity—finding like minds, sharing resources, working toward common goals, building community—may offer some of the tools we will need in a time of overwhelming forces—climate change, pandemics, and social and economic inequity. Read on, and find inspiration to join forces and work together for the future.
