Fun, Fantasy and Frivolity is pure unfiltered Roger Evans. While comical on the surface, the works explore the connection between memory and experience – between reality and fantasy – ranging from the absurd to the familiar. They include outdoor sculptures, paintings full of texture and color, a mosaic, a book and a collection of prints and drawings. They are a culmination of all that he has experienced in his life; his memories, dreams and perceptions, woven into narratives that are full of humor.
Roger was already 40 when he came to Placitas in the early 70s. He was not part of the hippy movement, though he admits to being inspired by them. He purchased land in the forest off Tunnel Springs Road where he continues to live in a domed house—just seven hundred square feet of living space plus a two-hundred-foot loft for sleeping – tiled in mosaic with animal sculptures at every turn. One can’t help but marvel at his talent for remaining positive in an uncertain world – all while having the last laugh.
“Someone asked, ‘What would you call this art?’ And I thought about that. I guess I would call it contemporary folk art.”
The artists’ reception will be celebrated with fellowship and refreshments on Saturday, May 16, 1-3 pm. The First Sunday ARTScrawl on May 3 from 11 am to 1 pm will include a meet the artist segment as Roger shares some original drawings and the stories behind his images.
