‘Neoglyphs, Thomas Christopher Haag’s latest solo show with Lapis Room, presents one man’s exploration of cosmic order and underlying mystery. At first glance, the pieces radiate a joyful, almost deceptively simple palette—bright colors organized into crisp, rhythmic structures. So fun! So pure! Cosmic truths distilled to their essence and spoonfed into our eyes and hearts so hungry for answers! These works invite the viewer into a space of immediate, satisfying harmony and clarity.
But then you look again. The intricate scaffolding beneath the surface begins to reveal itself. Dense layers of symbolic language operate as personal glyphs charting a complex spiritual journey. Painted in the months immediately preceding Thomas’s recent lymphoma diagnosis, this series possesses an uncanny, almost prophetic vibration. The “neoglyphs” function as a form of cosmic shorthand, suggesting a deep, intuitive vision of a forthcoming “test.” Simultaneously deeply personal and profoundly universal, these are not merely paintings; they are maps of a future unknowingly felt.
On view at Lapis Room in Old Town, Albuquerque every day through May 31.
