Titled after her final collaboration at Tamarind, this exhibition coincides with the permanent installation of Smith’s All My Relations I + II (2022), where it will be accessible to visiting students, artists and scholars. In this two-part accordion book, Jaune paid homage to the great escape of books, encapsulating their enduring place in her heart as a world outside of daily strife and struggle. Amongst quotes from Joni Mitchell, Chiefs Seattle and Crowfoot, and Leonardo da Vinci, Jaune includes personal instructions (BE AN OUTSIDER), exclamations (I LOVE THE NIGHT LIFE!) and, perhaps most importantly, statements that ring with the same touch of the immortal that is Jaune’s legacy: WE ARE ALL / IN THIS TOGETHER. All My Relations offers one of infinite ways we will now and in the future celebrate how Jaune reshaped our own world, and the cultural and communal landscape through a life of fearless individuality, fellowship, activism, and collaboration.
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: All My Relations is organized by Tamarind Institute in honor of the late American artist, an experienced and prolific printmaker who first connected with Tamarind in 1978 during her graduate years at The University of New Mexico at the invitation of Director Emerita Marjorie Devon. Smith would go on to professionally collaborate with the workshop on over 40 editions, the longest-running relationship the workshop has had with any woman artist. All My Relations features 20 lithographs by Smith, made in residence at Tamarind from 1980 to 2022, alongside works by artists whose paths and practices were influenced through their meeting and longterm relationship with the artist, including Jeffrey Gibson, Rose B. Simpson, Duane Slick, Marie Watt and Emmi Whitehorse.
