Throughout history, artists have turned to favor metal work as their medium of choice, whether due to its durability and longevity (second to stone) and by its visual allure and shimmer, metal is still preferred by many contemporary artists. By 1927 nearly half of the registered metal workers in the Arts and Crafts movement were women, however, the hammer has been slow to come down on what has been considered primarily a male-dominated field. Disrupting the dominant male narrative where others have always had a presence, but not a voice started with pioneering modern and contemporary artists who worked in metal, such as Claire Falkenstein, Barbara Hepworth, Ruth Asawa, Lousie Bourgeios, to Lynda Benglis. The group of artists presented in METAL RULES! At INHABIT Galerie carry on disrupting and innovating in this medium, and L.G.B.T.Q.+ and women continue to melt, sculpt, cast, weld and hand-forge a new path within the art world -and are a force to be reckoned with.
