Opening: Malinche

February 6, 5:00 pm9:00 pm MST

Secret Gallery is pleased to present Malinche, an exhibition opening February 6, 2026, featuring the work of 30+ Southwest Chicana, Latinx, and Indigenous artists who carry forward the legacy of Malinche, also known as Malinzin or Doña Marina. Rather than revisiting her as a historical subject alone, the exhibition positions Malinche as an inherited presence: one whose strategies of survival, translation, and adaptation continue to shape the experience of women navigating language, power, and identity today.

For centuries, Malinche has been reduced to symbol, blamed, romanticized, or erased. Malinche centers voices who recognize her not as a cautionary tale, but as a predecessor. Through their work, the exhibition frames legacy as something lived and carried, passed through bodies, languages, and cultural memory rather than fixed in historical judgment.

The artists in Malinche engage contemporary and research-driven practices that treat her legacy as both inheritance and resistance. Their works speak to experiences of survival, living within borderlands, and cultural negotiation, tracing a lineage from Malinche’s survival under colonial violence to the ongoing creative strategies women employ today.
