Opening: Just Wood, Mostly

Archway Gallery presents Just Wood—Mostly, an imaginative exhibition of whimsical, inventive, and functional works by Robert L. Straight, joined by guest artist Tom Wells, on view February 7 through March 5, 2026. Meet the artists February 7 at the opening reception to be held 5-8 pm.

Working primarily in wood, Straight pushes his playful sensibility further than ever, creating unexpected pieces that range from sculptural body parts and handcrafted clocks to a fully wooden, to-scale midget race car. His work balances humor, craftsmanship, and surprise, inviting viewers to experience wood in entirely new ways. Complementing Straight’s exuberant creations, Houston furniture-maker Tom Wells brings refined cabinetmaking and distinctive furniture designs shaped by his background as a chemical engineer. Together, the artists celebrate wood’s versatility, merging artistry, utility, and imagination in a show that is both delightful and deeply crafted.
