Act Two

Archway Gallery is pleased to present Act Two, an exhibit that brings together prints and tapestries by Archway Gallery artist Blaine Davis and monoprints by guest artist Charles Tanner—on view November 7 through December 3, 2026. Attend the opening reception Saturday, November 7, 5 to 8 p.m., when guests can meet the artists and enjoy the artists’ talks starting at 6:30 p.m.

This is the second time their work has been shown together. The first was in an exhibit at the premier wine storage facility, Nos Caves Vin, in 2021. Hence the current exhibit’s title, Act Two.

Davis and Tanner have printed in the same studios for some 30 years—first at The Glassell School of Art, where both men studied with Suzanne Manns and master printer Patrick Masterson, then later at Burning Bones Press.

Although they have never collaborated, their work has some commonalities. Both begin by making an initial image more or less intuitively, often using elements one might find in a collage. Davis makes this image as an etching, which he then develops through multiple “states” during which the image might change a great deal. Tanner creates the initial image as a monochromatic monoprint, which he develops by adding multiple layers of transparent colored inks.

“While we don’t do collaborative pieces,” say both Davis and Tanner, “it’s nice to have someone else around to make suggestions and offer encouragement. Sometimes it’s just that one little nudge that takes a piece a couple of steps higher.”
