About
In 1925, pioneering painter Olive Rush wrote, "Artists are spiritual adventurers, and the strange beauty of the Southwest invites us to dare all things." In 1920, Rush moved into the small adobe house at 630 Canyon Road. Her painting flourished there—becoming freer, more modern, more intuitive, and more spirit-centered. Rush established a bountiful garden under the century-old apple trees. She respected and befriended local Indigenous painters and supported their art as a buyer, reviewer, mentor, and teacher of fresco and mural painting. Upon her death, she bequeathed the house to the Santa Fe Quaker Meeting, who managed 630 Canyon Road from 1966 to 2023. In 2023, a new nonprofit organization called the Olive Rush Memorial Studio purchased the historic home and studio, including a robust collection of her art and furnishings and an archive of papers and photographs. The house museum now displays Rush’s art and tells her story. Through docent-led tours, art classes, and community gatherings, the art center fosters creativity and artistic and spiritual adventures among locals and visitors.
