From Sam Scott’s post-war paintings to Larry Bell and Susanna Fritscher’s preoccupations with light and space, Pie Projects Contemporary Art’s spring–summer season includes resonant exhibitions accompanied by a series of artist conversations.

Pie Projects Contemporary Art presents a dynamic season, from artist conversations to cross-disciplinary collaborations, reflecting a diverse roster of artists whose practices foster both community and dialogue, while also contributing to broader conversations.
APRIL
Sam Scott: Ascending Zones
through April 25
Sam Scott was one of three artists chosen by the State Department to represent the U.S. in person at its first post-war cultural exchange with Vietnam. The paintings in Ascending Zones are meditations on the power of reconciliation, exhibited as a unified group for the first time.

MAY
Jill O’Bryan: A New Breath
May 2–June 6
opening: May 2, 4-6 pm
A New Breath brings together three interconnected bodies of work that trace Jill O’Bryan’s decades-long investigation recording interactive processes with the elements: Earth and air—frottage drawings (rubbings) of the ground, lotus paintings, and variations on breath meditation drawings.

Govinda Sah ‘Azad’: Meditations
May 2–June 6
Transcending traditional cloudscapes, London-based Nepalese artist Govinda Sah ‘Azad’s paintings capture the essence of the emptying mind. He achieves abstract canvases evocative of sublime imagery with opalescent tones and at times, streaks of smoke breathed onto the canvas like brushstrokes.

JUNE
Judy Tuwaletstiwa: Incantations
June 13–July 18
opening, June 13, 4-6 pm
Incantations presents a new series by Judy Tuwaletstiwa exploring full passages of color through sheets of kiln-fired glass. Following two visits to James Turrell’s Roden Crater, Tuwaletstiwa felt inspired by the hues revealed through the oculus at the site. Incantations is her quest to once again bathe in a spectrum of colors.

Larry Bell and Susanna Fritscher: as Light, as Air
July 25–August 29
opening: July 25, 4-6 pm
The summer finale brings together artists whose practices share a preoccupation with light, atmosphere, and the threshold between the material and the immaterial. Larry Bell, a pivotal figure in the history of Light and Space, and Paris-based artist Susanna Fritscher, known for delicate, immersive installations, meet in as Light, as Air.
August Muth: Color Fields
July 25–August 29
opening: July 25, 4-6 pm
Color Fields presents holographic works, exploring color field abstractions that stretch beyond the bounds of their archival glass surface, moving in space with the viewer, who is subject to their own unique experience of each artwork.
