Vol. 10 — Radical Futures
In Radical Futures—a companion volume to our previous issue, Living Histories—we consider futures as close as tomorrow and as distant as 2180.
In times of uncertainty and upheaval, envisioning the future is a radical act. As artists, writers, creators, and readers, engaging in this vital act of reimagining and resistance stretches our imaginations across a broadening horizon. Radical futures tug at the roots of structures and systems in place, revealing their interconnections, and loosening their grip. As cultural critic T.J. Demos writes, “Radical futurisms remake time. They derail temporal trajectories from present tracks, casting the what’s-to-come into the undetermined not-yet.”
In this issue, we ask our readers to contribute their visions of the future, which sweep from dystopian to utopian imaginings. We consult with science fiction authors and futurists, reflect on entropy, and consider cataclysm. And we speak with artists doing the important work of shaping the future.
