Mercado/Material
October 16, 2026–March 7, 2027
Centro de Artes, San Antonio
A new exhibition at the free Centro de Artes gallery in Market Square is worth a Downtown San Antonio visit this fall. The gallery is celebrating ten years of bringing contemporary art, Latino history, and South Texas stories into the center of one of San Antonio’s most iconic gathering places.
Its anniversary exhibition, Mercado/Material, opens October 16, 2026, and runs through March 7, 2027. Curated by Mia Lopez, the show looks at the vivid visual world of mercados, corner-store bodegas and grocery aisles through a contemporary-art lens. Expect vibrant paintings, ceramic sculptures, and installations that explore how Latinx communities shop, work, gather, and create meaning through the everyday experience of the marketplace.
Art at the Market
The exhibition could not be more at home than it is at Centro de Artes. The building began life in 1922 as a Produce Market Annex of Market Square. Decades later, it became a space for public gatherings and cultural programming; it also housed the Smithsonian-affiliated Museo Alameda before the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture began managing the space in 2016.
Today, the gallery stands as a free, community-centered place dedicated to telling the story of the Latino experience in the United States, particularly in South Texas.
For Mercado/Material, Lopez brings together more than a dozen artists from Texas, Chicago, and New York City. The exhibition includes work by the late Chuck Ramirez, the San Antonio artist and former H-E-B art director known for elevating ordinary consumer objects into striking visual subjects.
Market Square has long been a place where people meet, work, trade, eat, celebrate, and carry cultural knowledge forward. Mercado/Material asks visitors to consider how that same commerce-filled environment shapes the look, language, and identity of Latino communities.
A Decade of Making Room
In its first decade under City management, Centro de Artes has presented twenty-eight exhibitions featuring 3,180 artworks by 600 artists. The gallery is guided by the Centro de Artes Committee and uses community-informed programming and exhibition proposals to make space for both emerging and established artists and curators.
This approach makes the gallery more than a place to see art. It is also a place where careers can begin. An artist’s first exhibition credit can become the beginning of a fuller portfolio. A first-time curator can develop a large-scale show, take risks, and build experience in a professional public setting.
For visitors, the impact can be just as personal. The gallery welcomes more than 33,000 visitors annually, and its always-free admission means that anyone visiting Market Square can experience contemporary art without planning ahead or paying a ticket price.
During the anniversary season, that access takes on added meaning. Mercado/Material arrives alongside Fiestas Patrias and Hispanic Heritage Month, creating an opportunity to celebrate the cultural expressions that have long made the district a vital part of San Antonio.
