Hills Snyder: 72 Drawings, Gallery Sonja Roesch, September
5 – December 31, an exhibition of drawings collected from five projects: Altered States; Your Nowhere is My Somewhere. See You There; Magdalena; Splendora Drawings; and Vienna Drawings.
Altered States: a collection of 242 drawings made 2016-2019, based on photographs taken while driving a route determined by American towns with evocative names, suggestive of utopian ideals, idealized pasts, mythical futures, downers, reckonings, false hopes, every day aspirations, states less defined, offering a spectrum of emotions and conditions which float in a country of association. Those included here are all from 2018-2019.
Your Nowhere is My Somewhere. See You There: a set of 40 drawings made in 2016-2017, based on sites in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, half of them made at Chinati Hot Springs. First shown at Bale Creek Allen Gallery, Austin, TX, 2017.
Magdalena: 21 drawings made 2021-2024, based on sites in Magdalena, New Mexico, where the artist moved to from San Antonio, Texas in 2019, originally shown at 14BC Gallery, NYC, 2023, and Warehouse 1-10, Magdalena, New Mexico, 2024.
Splendora Drawings: 13 drawings made at Splendora Gardens, known now as the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature, for an exhibition there in 2017 at the invitation of then curator of the space, Jeff Wheeler.
Vienna Drawings: 6 drawings made on top of a piano at an art fair in Vienna, 2016.
These drawings, mainly derived from peripheral or abandoned locations, exist somewhere between representation, quantum fantasy, and sheer love of drawing, perhaps implying that the center of the universe may be found anywhere.
Hills Snyder: 72 Drawings is showing concurrently with an exhibition at the Amarillo Museum of Art, Hills Snyder: Strays (a selection, 1973 – 2026, August 29 – December 13, opening reception September 18.
