Tucson Museum of Art
Opening at the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block from December 13, 2025 through May 10, 2026, On the Edge: Los Angeles Art from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection brings together an extraordinary selection of contemporary art, including works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, and David Hockney.
Joan and Jack Quinn stand as central figures in the evolution of the Los Angeles art scene during the second half of the 20th century. At a time when the city was emerging as a force for innovation and cultural experimentation, the Quinns were uniquely positioned at the heart of a thriving creative community. Joan Quinn became a muse, confidante, and champion of a generation of artists whose voices would soon define the West Coast’s creative scene. Her magnetic presence drew artists toward her, and her home became a hub where ideas, styles, and movements were exchanged.
Meanwhile, Jack Quinn used his influence and expertise as a respected attorney to guide emerging artists and their galleries through the complicated intersections of law, business, and artistic practice. His support helped provide structure and protection at a time when many artists were breaking new ground and challenging the norms of the art market. As a result, On the Edge exudes a unique spirit of anti-conformity and the “California Cool” ethos and the featured works are bound together by the generosity and critical connection between artist and collector.
The Tucson Museum of Art’s exhibition draws on the Quinn Family Collection to illuminate a defining three-decade era in Los Angeles artmaking. On the Edge highlights the significance of the Ferus Gallery in championing a postwar generation of California artists, the role of patronage and community in bolstering the West Coast art scene, and the boundary-pushing artistic experiments afforded by an emergent hub for contemporary art. The works displayed reflect a shared spirit of innovation and boldness that continues to influence art globally.
On the Edge is a testament to the profound impact of Joan and Jack Quinn, the artists they uplifted, and the uniquely collaborative culture of Los Angeles. Their legacy, brought to life at the Tucson Museum of Art, offers visitors an immersive look into a defining era that shaped the trajectory of West Coast art.
