Christina McNearney and Steve Phillips: The Remembered Earth
On view: October 9–November 1, 2025
Opening reception: Friday, October 10, 5:00-7:00 pm (First Friday Gallery Walk)
Steve and Christina have been married for over twenty-seven years. Christina noted Steve’s artistic talent early on yet didn’t think to encourage him to make art until after he retired from his career in archeological pursuits.
Christina is a retired educator who spent 10 years teaching Art at the University of Arizona and over twenty years teaching Art at Pima Community College. She is a painter who is also comfortable creating with an intaglio press.
“I bring my printmaking processes to my paintings and my painting skills to my prints….Both Steve and I love to hike and are deeply concerned with wildfire damage and mining waste. In my ramblings through the landscape patches around mining, I’ve taken note of my fascination with puddles of toxic waste that have an intriguing yet deadly allure.” – Christina McNearney
“Human subtlety will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does Nature, because in her inventions, nothing is lacking and nothing is superfluous.” Leonardo da Vinci said these words over 500 years ago, and these words serve as my mantra when carving and printing my linocuts. Linoleum block printing forces me to be simple and direct, to discard the superfluous, to reach for the elemental, the essential. I find that there is an inherent beauty in an image made from the simple process of pressing ink into paper.” – Steven Phillips
