Union Hall is delighted to welcome JayCee, Randall, and Wayne Beyale, for their debut family exhibition, Biyáál. The title comes from the Navajo translation of the family name, Beyale. Rooted in the sacred practices of Diné (Navajo) culture, the exhibition traces an intergenerational relationship to the Nightway ceremonial cycle, a foundational element of Diné healing and storytelling traditions.
Anchored by two large-scale sandpaintings by Denver-based artist JayCee Beyale, Biyáál brings together a collection of new and existing two- and three-dimensional works that invite viewers into a dialogue between past and present, ritual and innovation, family and community.
“A lot of the traditional and ceremonial knowledge that is passed down in my family is slowly fading,” says JayCee. “The opportunity to share our work collectively is a tribute and an archive of our traditional and cultural celebrations. The introduction of technology mixed with generational symbolism is how I preserve spiritual knowledge in an unconventional way.”
Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 12:00-6:00 pm. Visit UnionHallDenver.org/visit to plan your trip.
