The Hounds of El Delirio and Dogs of Defense
Jean Schaumberg and Laura Holt
Editors of upcoming SAR Press publication: The Hounds of El Delirio
Join former SAR staff members Laura Holt and Jean Schaumberg who will share the remarkable story of sisters Martha Root White and Amelia Elizabeth White, their passion for Irish Wolfhounds and Afghan Hounds, and their critical role in the U.S. Army’s Dogs for Defense program during World War II.
On the grounds of their Santa Fe estate, El Delirio, the White sisters built internationally recognized kennels—Rathmullan and Kandahar Kennels—and became influential figures in the American dog breeding and showing world. After the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Bataan Death March, Elizabeth White used her resources and reputation to support the war effort by helping launch Dogs for Defense, a national initiative to train pets for military service.
This talk is inspired by the forthcoming book The Hounds of El Delirio by Nancy Owen Lewis, currently being prepared for publication by Holt, Schaumberg, and SAR Press Managing Editor Miriam Kolar.
FREE admission. Advance registration encouraged.
Gates open at 9 AM. Talk begins at 10 AM.
