The Support Santa Fe Gift Guide series features treasures from local shops, makers, and organizations. We’ll be covering books, art, crafts, lifestyle, and philanthropy. Presenting: the Food + Drink Edition.
To the Santa Fe community and beyond, this gift guide is here to serve as a handy reference and to not-so-mildly implore you to please, for the love of god, shop local this year. The “Support Santa Fe” part of this gift guide was cooked up before the second lockdown was announced; so as shops now close their doors for the next two weeks, an ineffably vital time for retail (holiday sales account for an average of 20% of annual retail sales, and that’s in a non-pandemic year), we ask you to join us in supporting the makers, shops, and institutions whose futures were already in a precarious place due to the neverending year of 2020.
Let’s make sure we still have places to go browse, discover unexpected treasures, and interact with other community members who have put their hearts and souls into building their businesses. We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: let’s stick together.
The Support Santa Fe Gift Guide: Food + Drink Edition
At the time of publication, Santa Fe’s shops are mostly closed for in-person shopping until November 30. All shops featured here offer a number of solutions—curbside pick up, delivery, shipping, virtual shopping appointments, and more. Contact each retailer individually to learn more.
Post Flirtation Red 2019, Martha Stoumen
In lieu of a literal hug, sometimes a wine label will have to do. This natural wine from California winemaker Martha Stouman is a blend of Zinfandel and Carignan with notes of blackberry, dried plum, pine, and rosemary. In other words, delicious, easy to drink (isn’t everything these days), and rather nice when served lightly chilled.
Available at Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits, 1005 S St Francis Dr, Santa Fe, NM 87505. 505-984-1582.
Kinto Coyote Tumbler
For the friend who transported to Planet Earth Tones and never came back, this tumbler promises sustainable containment of hot and cold beverages while remaining on-brand, as it were. Coming in at an easy-going eight ounces, it’s ideal for those who prefer a more mildly-caffeinated state.
Available at Sky Coffee, 1609 A Alcaldesa St, Santa Fe, NM 87501. No phone, email mgr@skysantafe.com.
Drinking Chocolate Elixirs
The real question is why don’t you frequent Kakawa on a weekly basis? This Santa Fe treasure makes liquid gold, which you can even buy in its dried form to take home and make later. Available in a number of flavors, including Chile, which is so good you might forget where you are and how you got there.
Available at Kakawa, 1050 Paseo De Peralta, Santa Fe, NM 87501. 505-982-0388.
Gourmet Macarons and Cookies
If you follow Chainé Santa Fe on Instagram you’re probably as envious of local baker Chaine Peña’s artistic macarons as you are her impeccable manicures. We can’t help you with the latter, but you can order the former for anyone on your list who likes a sweet as beautiful as it is delicious.
Available at Chainé Gourmet Cookies, 131 W Water St, Santa Fe, NM 87501. 505-570-4496.
Dram Apothecary Bitters
Herbal bitters made in Colorado, Dram bitters come in a variety of flavors. Gift Black Bitters (black cardamom, black tea, sweet black currants, and a black pepper finish) or Palo Santo Bitters (vanilla, exotic spice, fresh-cut timber, and a hint of smoke) to the friend who’s mastering mixology with their at-home cocktails. Gift the Hair of the Dog Bitters (ginger, fennel, cinnamon, and wild herbs) to the friend who perhaps had too many cocktails. This may be the same friend, in which case, they get all three.
Available at Sub Rosa Mercantile, 65 W Marcy St, Santa Fe, NM 87501. 505-428-9528.
Thanks to Whiskey Glass Set
For the person who could use a drink, a laugh, or both. These whiskey glasses from Ranger Station capture the spirit of the year while providing an excellent container for actual spirits. Make it a double.
Available at Santa Maria Provisions, 25 E Palace Ave, Sena Plaza Courtyard, Santa Fe, NM 87501. 505-983-2411.
Scrubby’s Smiley
If someone/everyone on your list is also tired of doing the dishes every day after every meal because that’s my life now, thanks for asking, these sweet little scrubbing devices add a least a little cheer to the suds and scrubs. Made from non-abrasive silicone to prevent scratches, they come in Smiley, Rooster, Turtle, and Pig. Editor’s note: definitely do not gift these as the main gift to someone important in your life. That is not a true gift. Best paired with something a little more luxurious.
Available at Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe, 181 Paseo De Peralta, Santa Fe, NM 87501. 505-988-3394.
