Joseph Mulholland’s painting/drawing practice is inextricably tied to writing and literature. Working in oil paint, pastel, and charcoal, He is drawn to storytelling that elicits a wide range of interpretations from the viewer.
Ideas for his paintings are inspired by daily free writing exercises or by lines from his poetry. In addition, he makes preparatory collages that are used as references for many of his paintings.
Joseph Mulholland is a painter and a poet. He grew up in Albuquerque and studied painting and creative writing at California College of the Arts. He later moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico where he obtained a B.A. and M.A. in Latin American literature from the University of Puerto Rico. In November of 2022, he finished his Ph.D. in comparative literature at the University of Toronto. He currently lives in Santa Fe and teaches creative writing and literature at Santa Fe Community College.
